Something I felt strongly about once our baby started eating solids was that I wanted to use fresh bread products to minimize the amount of preservatives consumed. I have made a number of bread products to decide what to switch out and what to just buy at the store. Here are some of the bread products we rarely buy anymore, if ever.

We never buy english muffins. I make them about once a week, with a recipe that was given to me by a friend. These make for an easy snack, whether at home or on-the-go.

I like to make tortillas fresh, but we do still buy these occasionally. They are quite easy to make, but cooking them can be time consuming. So I only make them if I have something planned in advance.

The closest place to us that sells chocolate chip bagels is about 30 minutes away, and I prefer to stay away from that area. So I started making my own. These taste so good on the first day, that they usually do not make it to a second day.

We never buy sourdough bread, I bought it was at a local farm but it only lasted about a day before it had mold and it was very dry. So once I made it myself, I could not switch to store bought. I make us sourdough bread for sandwiches, almost every week. But as pictured above, I like to switch it up with flavors. They bread in the picture above is s’mores, and the other is a jalapeño cheddar.

I usually make us plain sourdough for sandwiches, or I like having it as toast with my eggs in the morning for breakfast. Some products not pictured here that I make instead of buying now are naan, soft pretzels, muffins, pizza dough, and banana bread. Making the switch at first can be daunting and feel like a lot of work but now that it is just a normal part of life, it usually isn’t even something I think about, and it saves us a lot of money.
