Our family loves to go to u-pick farms for produce. Strawberry picking is typically the first stop of the season. We love strawberries, so we usually pick a lot so we can save them for later too.

We spend a good hour cleaning every strawberry through a whole process, but it is definitely worth it. We use thieves veggie soak to clean them off.

Then we do a good rinse and spin.

Spinning the strawberries in a salad spinner helps us minimize our paper towel waste, and cuts down on how many dish towels we have to wash.

We cut the tops off of the strawberries. Although there are ways to cut strawberries for less waste, we do it this way so that we can give our chickens and ducks a tasty snack.

Next step, cutting up all of the strawberries. After they are all cut up, we start sorting through them. I am quite picky, so I like to decide what gets refrigerated and what gets frozen.

I like to use reusable bags for the strawberries that I store in the freezer for future use. The main use for our frozen strawberries is making smoothies during summer.

We store about 1/3 of the strawberries in the refrigerator for immediate consumption. They only lasted us about 4-5 days in there this time because we ate them all.

Then, I use a small amount of strawberries to make jam and syrup. We use the strawberry jam on english muffins, and the strawberry syrup on vanilla ice cream for a treat. In addition to many yummy treats, strawberry picking is just an overall fun family activity!
